Efficient Operations
Efficient Operations Teaser

We leverage the MS-168 program to reduce emissions and our carbon footprint. This program incentivizes facilities to adopt energy-efficient processes and technologies, streamline operations and prioritize sustainability. As part of our facility design, equipment purchases and modernization efforts, we assess both energy consumption and energy sources to drive operational improvements and cut emissions.

Plant Audits

Our Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) leadership plays a central role in guiding the development of sustainable, efficient operations. These efforts include a variety of initiatives, such as retrofitting lighting at plants and distribution centers with energy-efficient LED alternatives.

We evaluate the effectiveness of our EHS protocols and identify opportunities for improvement through a robust third-party audit program.

Conducted by qualified external firms, this program includes:

  • Environmental compliance audits
  • Health and safety compliance audits
  • Property risk and fire protection audits
  • Product stewardship and chemical compliance audits

These audits provide actionable insights for local managers, helping strengthen EHS and product stewardship outcomes while ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements, RPM standards and industry best practices.

Facility Improvements

Climate change and the evolving energy landscape require us to consider and adopt more resilient and sustainable operating practices. As part of MS-168, we have made improvements to our facilities to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and use of energy, waste and water. A few examples of our operational changes include:

  • Our Fibergrate facility in Mexico and Stonhard facility in South Africa completed the installation of solar panels in FY25. This has helped reduce both facilities’ electricity costs by up to 30% monthly and improve electricity reliability.
  • Our Viapol facility in Candeias, Brazil, installed 325 kW of solar capacity to reduce costs and improve electricity reliability. At its Caçapava facility, Viapol performed equipment maintenance, introduced automation and enhanced the performance of its air compressors and exhaust system to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions by 29 tons per year. These actions are helping the company reach its goal of reducing GHG emissions by 20% by 2030.
  • Across its manufacturing footprint, Stonhard has made significant improvements in process safety and efficiency, developing solutions that enable it to recycle the solvent used in its manufacturing processes. Through these efforts, Stonhard is reducing its environmental impacts and costs while enabling associates to work safely and efficiently at its facilities worldwide.
